DN-S5000: True Vinyl Emulation is Just the Start Denon's DN-S5000 is a table-top single CD player that performs tricks that no other CD player can touch. It features a motor-driven active platter that allows Scratch or Search functions that completely mimic a turntable with vinyl on it. That's all there is to it; we know quite a few DJ's who've finally parked their turntables and gone over to the DN-S5000 for good! Another amazing feat is that this unit can play back two tracks from the same CD at the same time, and you can even mix between them. Denon calls this the Main and Alpha track, or "2 in one." One drive serves the function of two. A third great trick is Hot Disc; you've got a full 35 seconds from when you eject the disk to insert another, and you can make this even longer by looping within the Hot Disc memory. Finally, when it comes to scratching you can do this from the Main, Alpha or Sampler tracks. That's just the beginning of what this CD player can do. Platter effects include Drag-S, Brake/Echo and Dump/Reverse, and these can be applied to Main or Alpha tracks, or both. Forward Scratching is easily performed. Connecting two DN-S5000's adds even more features; you can view one deck's Memo data from another (more on this below,) and they can be set up for Relay Play, Program Relay Play and Randon Relay Play thanks to the X-Effect In and Out ports. The Main and Alpha tracks feature separate digital outs (coaxial S/PDIF.) Another nice piece of programming allows constant 44.1kHz digital output even when playback speed is varied. When it comes to tempo, BPM values can be entered manually, tapped in or detected automatically via AUTO BPM. The 100mm pitch slider offers a very long throw for accuracy in speed changes. A unique Mirror Mix function lets you play the same track delayed by a rhythmic interval that can be adjusted on the fly, for a cool doubling/delay result. When it comes to sampling and looping, the DN-S5000 provides four seamless loops and two samplers (with about 15 seconds of full-quality audio.) A-B Splice removes sections of a track seamlessly, and A-B Trim/Move points allow for fine adjustment via the Scratch Disk of loop, sampler and splice points. Four Hot Start points and six Stutter Cue play points are furnished. Memo functions can be stored separately for Main and Alpha track playback, and remembers Cue Point, Playback Pitch, Pitch Range, Pitch On/Off, Key Adjust On/Off,and Seamless Loop data. All this can be copied to another unit, and Memo info from Denon's DN-D9000 or DN-2600F can be copied to a DN-S5000. Up to 25 tracks on a CD can be programmed for seqeuenced playback, with storage for up to six disks. Pitch control can be set to any of five ranges: ±4%, 10%, 16%, 24% or 100%.. Start time is just 0.2 seconds so you won't be kept waiting. Every DJ needs a couple of these CD decks.
